La mesa de luz

La primera noche en Nueva York pasé por Times Square, la plaza que forman Broadway y la 7th Ave. Este lugar es conocido en todo el mundo por sus anuncios de neón y por la fiesta que se monta cada noche vieja. Es curioso que la plaza reciba el nombre de un periódico.

En 1904 el New York Times decidió trasladarse hasta esta zona de la ciudad. En aquel entonces resultaba un lugar poco noble. Pero Alfred Ochs, editor del periódico, convenció al gobierno municipal de llevar el metro a la zona regenerando el lugar. El diario se trasladó años después a la cercana West 43th pero su edificio, la plaza y las zonas aledañas mantuvieron el nombre. Me pregunto si Público algún día dará nombre a una plaza… o al menos a una calle.

Voy con un día de retraso en relación con mi viaje. Hoy he visitado varios rincones del Midtown, barrio en el que se encuentra mi Hotel. Ha sido un día tormentoso. La humedad es muy alta y me cuesta aclimatarme. Una de las tormentas me ha pillado en la calle y he terminado empapado. Aunque ha dado un poco lo mismo… me paso el día sudando y con la camiseta empapada.

He visto en los comentarios que se mencionaba B&H. Allí he estado y en los próximos días os contaré mi experiencia.

Ya estoy de vacaciones. Dentro de algo más de seis horas estaré en Nueva York gastándome el dinero que he ganado y ahorrado durante este último año siendo un esbirro de la edición gráfica. Como decía en mi primer post un esbirro es un secuaz a sueldo o movido por interés… Y a pesar de que me encanta mi trabajo y que mis compañeros lo hacen siempre divertido y llevadero, trabajo por dinero.

Todos necesitamos desconectar. E invertir ese dinero que no puedes gastar durante el año en ver mundo no me parece mala idea. El mundo exterior, esa cosa que hay tras las ventanas de la redacción y que me paso el día observando a través de imágenes que fotógrafos de todo el planeta nos hacen llegar a nuestra sala de moqueta y fluorescente. Por ello a partir de ahora hablaré poco de edición gráfica y dedicaré mis post a mostrar un poco de lo que será mi periplo por los USA… “Diario de un esbirro de la edición gráfica de vacaciones.”

Os doy las gracias a todos por vuestros comentarios e interés por esta humilde bitácora. Espero que lo paséis bien este mes de Agosto y que seáis benévolos con mis imágenes vacacionales de los próximos post. En Septiembre volveremos a editar.

Hoy es día de descanso en el Tour de France, la carrera ciclista por etapas más importante del mundo. En la etapa de ayer que recorría los montes suizos, el español Alberto Contador consiguió hacerse con la victoria en el alto de Verbier y con el maillot amarillo de líder. He realizado una pequeña edición sobre lo que fue el día de ayer, espero que os guste.

La fotografía de ciclismo en ruta es muy especial. El fotógrafo debe servirse de la ayuda de un motorista que le lleva de un punto a otro de la carrera. Esto hace que el motorista sea los segundos pares de manos y ojos del fotógrafo como cuenta un fotero de Reuters en el blog de esta agencia. Aunque algunas de las fotos de este post fueron realizadas por fotógrafos que no iban en moto y se encontraban entre el público durante la subida.

Mi jefe Jon Barandica se dedicó a cubrir ciclismo durante la época de Indurain y nos habla a menudo a la gente de la mesa sobre la fotografía de ciclismo y el propio deporte. Nos cuenta como antes tenían que revelar en un cuartucho y transmitir con unas pesadas máquinas conectadas al cable del teléfono que tardaban una eternidad en enviar a la redacción. Siempre eran los últimos en irse mientras los de la organización desmontaban el chiringuito de la llegada. Hoy en día, a eso de las seis de la tarde, ya han llegado todas las fotos de la etapa. Estos últimos días el ciclismo es tema recurrente en nuestras conversaciones por el Tour de Francia. Espero que a Jon también le guste esta edición.
