La próxima boda del Principe William de Inglaterra no deja de darnos imágenes. Todos los días llegan por el servicio de las agencias fotografías previas al enlace. La más habitual es la del típico artículo de merchandaising real en forma de porcelana, llavero, tapa, muñecos cabezudo, etc… Pero hoy Reuters nos envia un reportaje sobre la caballería británica que servirá de escolta a los recién casados el diía 29 de abril. Me parece un buen ejemplo de reportaje realizado correctamente. Buenos encuadres, diferentes escenas y puntos de vista que reflejan la vida cotidiana de estos militares.

Y cómo toque humorístico os dejo esta secuencia de “El sentido de la vida” de los Monty Phython que me ha venido a la cabeza mientras realizaba esta edición gráfica. Otro tipo de retrato del ejército británico.

Viendo las fotos que llegan de Libia y de el reciente conflicto de Costa de Marfil he recordado un cápitulo de Top Gear, el fantástico programa de coches de la BBC, en el que intentan destruir sin éxito una ranchera o pickup Toyota. Me gustaría hablar un poco sobre el tema con cierto respeto ya que estamos hablando de conflictos armados donde muere gente inocente. Hoy mismo se ha conocido la desaparicion del fotógrafo Manuel Brabo en Libia. Él es autor de alguna de las fotos de Efe que ilustran este post. Espero que esté bien.

Observando a los caóticos rebeldes libios y a los soldados marfileños, me da la sensación que se puede hacer saltar por los aires un país africano con tres elementos: un rifle de asalto AK-47, un lanza granadas o RPG y un pickup o ranchera. Podéis comprobar en los videos de Top Gear que este vehiculo parece ser casi indestructible. Lo hacen chocar, caer, lo sumergen en el mar, lo golpean con una caravana y una bola de demolición… y sigue arrancando. Tras la última prueba en una demolición de un edificio deciden colgarlo del techo del plató del programa como reconocimiento.

Las imágenes de rancheras llegadas desde Libia demuestran la dureza y versatilidad de este tipo de vehiculos. Puedes ver en la parte posterior abierta todo tipo de armas antiaereas y misiles. Ves a decenas de soldados y rebeldes montados en ellos. Ni el polvo del desierto, ni las balas, ni las bombas parecen parar a estos coches… En Libia se viene desarrollando un tipo de guerra en el que el pickup tiene mucha importancia. A lo largo de la costa, por las carreteras del desierto, los rebeldes avanzan en el pickup hasta entrar en contacto con el enemigo. Es el equivalente del Willys americano de la segunda guerra mundial, al que se le podía poner todo tipo de armamento y se utilizaba para labores de exploración, aprovisonamiento y transporte de heridos. He omitido las duras imágenes en las que se ve como los rebeldes llevan a sus heridos en el pickup.

Este parece ser el medio de transporte más barato, versátil y efectivo para la guerra… Igual que el AK-47 que ya vimos arder literalmente en un post anterior de La Mesa de Luz. El Kalashnikov es el rifle más utilizado del mundo y lamentablemente no escasea en Africa. Sigue funcionando aun sumergiéndolo en el agua, como le ocurre al pickup, y pasándolo por el barro. Es curioso cómo los soldados unen sus cartuchos con cinta adhesiva de cualquier tipo para disminuir el tiempo de recarga.

Pero he hecho trampas. Hay un elemento en estas guerras que no he mencionado en el título del post… el ser humano. Ninguna de estas máquinas no podría funcionar sin una persona que accionase el gatillo o pisase el acelerador. Y las razones que llevan a estas personas a la guerra son más complicadas de analizar mirando un puñado de fotografías que el funcionamiento de un coche o un rifle.
