Desde el pasado lunes me encuentro de vacaciones veraniegas. Ya en años anteriores hice un post para despedirme hasta septiembre de La Mesa de Luz  (2009 y 2010). En esta ocasión os dejo una edición de imágenes que tratan una de mis tags favoritas: “Fotógrafos trabajando”. En ellas podéis ver a compañeros fotógrafos trabajando en diferentes tipos de información. Seguro que alguno se descubre en alguna foto. Si bien creo que este año no haré nada muy interesante como viajar en un barco de vela como hice el año pasado o visitar  los campos de Gettysburg en los USA como hice en 2009, prometo dejaros algún post intesante durante este agosto de 2011.

Al filo de la media noche en Washington y al amanecer de nuestro lunes 2 de mayo en España, el presidente Obama anunció la muerte del perseguido terrorista Osama Bin Laden. Su cadaver ha sido lanzado al mar tras confirmar su identidad con una prueba de ADN. Hoy martes los periódicos españoles e internacionales llevan la noticia en portada pero no llevan la foto de Osama Bin Laden muerto. El gobierno americano tiene esas imágenes pero aun está pensando si las hace públicas. ¿Cómo ilustrar de manera gráfica esta importante noticia?

A primera hora de ayer las páginas web utilizaron en un primer momento la imágen que encabeza el post tratándola como si fuera la del cadáver del jefe de Al-Qaeda. Se trata de un montaje de otras dos instantaneas realizado con photoshop cómo pronto se destapó. Se fusionó la imágen de la derecha con otra de un hombre muerto en una camilla. Al bajar la resolución y aumentar el grano se puede realizar esta operación mas fácilmente. Pero la diferencia en este grano marca las dos capas y el desenfoque en la barba y la oreja hacen intuir sus bordes. También llama la atención el cambio en el color de la piel como se comenta en este post de Reuters.

Sobre estas líneas se ve cómo un técnico de Afp comprueba con un software especial que se trata de un fake, de un montaje. Que varios medios de comunicación dieran por buena esta imagen debe servir al internauta para desconfiar de muchas de las cosas que ve y lee en la web y que no han sido confirmadas por agencias y medios tradicionales.

En este combo se puede ver recortado en rojo la parte de la imagen de la derecha utilizada para realizar el montaje. El resto de foto en el montaje de la izquierda corresponde a una foto de otro cadáver. Se nota la diferencia en el grano y en el desenfoque del borde.

El fotógrafo de la agencia Reuters Jason Reed fue el encargado de cubrir el comunicado de Obama en la Casa Blanca. En este post en el blog de la agencia cuenta cómo fue la experiencia. “Recibí una llamada a las 10 de la noche del domingo: ¿Cuanto tardarías en llegar a la Casa Blanca? Reuters había recibido una llamada urgente diciendo que el presidente Obama iba a hacer una declaración en 30 minutos. [...] Llegue allí en 14 minutos, una nueva mejor marca personal.” Cuenta Jason Reed que se dió cuenta de lo que estaba pasando cuando entró en la sala y pudo leer el discurso en el telepromter. Es curioso cómo segun Reed Obama hizo la declaración dos veces, una para la cámara de televisión y otra para los fotógrafos que se mantuvieron en silencio durante el directo.

Tras el discurso los fotógrafos descubrieron en el exterior de la Casa Blanca a un gran número de personas que habían salido a la calle a celebrar la noticia portando banderas. “Supuse que, cómo ya había ocurrido en las calles de El Cairo durante las revueltas, las redes sociales como facebook o twitter habían contribuido al encuentro masivo y aleatorio de diferentes personas en un mismo lugar.” Dice Jason Reed, autor de la imágen de los jovenes frente a la Casa Blanca, otro tipo de foto que llegó ayer a la redacción por los servicios de las agencias y que ilustran hoy artículos en páginas interiores de los diarios.

Otra de las opciones de los editores gráficos ha sido la imagen de la que fue la última morada del lider de Al-Qaeda. Una casa en una localidad de Pakistán a 50 kilómetros de su capital. Las imágenes no son definitivas para ilustrar el tema y no se diferencían mucho de la mansión del malo de cualquier película de Chuck Norris. También existen unas capturas de video del interior de la casa y una imagen de stringer de la casa en llamas durante la operación. En mi opinión no tienen fuerza ni calidad técnica suficiente para ilustrar la información. Pero en algunos casos su carga informativa ha pesado más que su calidad y han sido utilizadas para la portada.

Pero la mayoría de las publicaciones de todo el mundo han optado por el retrato de archivo de Osama Bin Laden. Todas las agencias han enviado fotos de este tipo. Su rostro ha sido el símbolo del terrorismo islámico durante estos 10 años y, a falta de la imagen de su cadáver, esta parecía la mejor opción para ilustrar su muerte. Aquí tenéis algunas de estas imágenes.

También existía la opción de tirar de imágenes de archivo de los atentados perpetrados por Al-Queda. Fotos del ataque al World Trade Center y los atentados del 11M de Madrid ilustran piezas en el interior de los periódicos. Aun impresionan estas fotos a pesar del tiempo transcurrido. Aquí tenéis algunas de ellas.

¿Por qué es tan importante la imagen del cadáver de Osama Bin Laden? Edición gráfica y portadas a parte, la foto del cuerpo sin vida del terrorista sería la prueba final de su desaparición. En este caso el “si no lo veo no lo creo” o el ” una imagen vale más que mil palabras” (o pruebas de ADN) tienen un especial significado y la teoría de la conspiración crece más y mejor sin un documento gráfico. El gobierno  de los USA se escuda en no desvelar sus métodos que podrían hacer fracasar futuras operaciones antiterroristas. Yo creo que las imágenes son demasiado fuertes y no era beneficioso que los jovenes estadounidenses se paseasen por las calles celebrando la noticia con carteles de la cara destrozada de un hombre. Por esto Obama y su equipo esperan a un mejor momento para hacerlas públicas.

Otro punto importante para querer ver la imagen actual de Osama es que se desconoce cual es su aspecto en la actualidad. Arriba podemos ver un famoso retrato actual realizado por el FBI con la cara de Llamazares. Los videos de Al-Qaeda suelen haber sido grabados en fechas distantes o estar elaborados con material de archivo. También se desconoce el lugar exacto en el que se realizaron. Por ello la foto del cadáver de Bin Laden tiene tanta importancia, sería la primera en mucho tiempo en la que sabemos a ciencia cierta dónde y cuando ha sido realizada.

En cualquier caso, mientras escribo este post, aun no se ha hecho pública la foto que parecen estar viendo Obama, Biden y Clinton en la siguiente instantánea.

A última hora de ayer se hizo pública esta foto a través del flickr de la Casa Blanca. En esta imágen realizada por Pete Souza se ve en la sala de situación al equipo de Obama y a él mismo siguiendo la operación de captura de Bin Laden. Esta es para mi la foto del día y de la noticia. Es el lado del verdugo a falta de la foto del reo. Y las caras de los presentes son un poema… la cara que pondría cualquiera al ver la imagen del cadáver de Osama Bin Laden.

Hace tres años ya del post de presentación de este blog en el que aparecía una fotografía muy parecida a la que encabeza hoy este post de aniversario. Durante estos tres años creo que he conseguido la mayoría de los objetivos que me marqué al inicio: Poder enseñar buenas fotos que llegan a nuestras manos y que no publicamos, dar consejos, explicar en que consiste el trabajo del editor y contar como trabajan los fotoperiodistas.

Pero este blog no sería posible sin el apoyo y ayuda de mis compañeros de sección. Les doy las gracias a todos ellos y de manera especial a los que tengo a mi lado en la actualidad : Jon, Pedro, Victoria, Imma, Fernando, Miguel, Lidia… También gracias a los compañeros de la web de nuestro diario y a los programadores y diseñadores web que siempre me atienden con una sonrisa… Y mando un saludo en este aniversario a nuestros fotógrafos colaboradores y a todos los fotógrafos de agencia que me me dan el material necesario para construir esta bitácora.

Y tambien os quiero dar las gracias a vosotros: los lectores y visitantes de la Mesa de Luz. Sin vuestro interés este espacio no tendría sentido. Sois miles los que cada semana visitáis las entradas de este blog del “Esbirro de la edición gráfica”. Y en estos tres años han sido 2.000 los comentarios que habéis realizado en los post. Este pasado mes de febrero alcancé los 20.000 visitantes únicos en un día gracias al post Así se hizo la foto de Tejero. Jamás imaginé que tal número de personas llegasen a ver un trabajo realizado por mi persona. Jamás imaginé que esto ocurriría cuando estudiaba en el instituto, había modems de 56k, los móviles eran del peso y tamaño de un ladrillo y haciamos un fanzine con la ayuda de una fotocopiadora…
