18:00

A cloud of ash billowing from Puyehue volcano near Osorno in southern Chile, 870 km south of Santiago, on June 5, 2011. Puyehue volcano erupted for the first time in half a century on June 4, 2011, prompting evacuations for 3,500 people as it sent a cloud of ash that reached Argentina. The National Service of Geology and Mining said the explosion that sparked the eruption also produced a column of gas 10 kilometers (six miles) high, hours after warning of strong seismic activity in the area.  AFP PHOTO/CLAUDIO SANTANA

Demonstrators fill up Madrid’s Puerta del Sol in this May 20, 2011 panoramic photo. Tens of thousands of Spaniards angry over joblessness protested for a sixth day on Friday in cities all over the country, and the government looked unlikely to enforce a ban on the demonstrations, fearing clashes. Dubbed “los indignados” (the indignant), the protesters have filled the main squares of Spain’s cities for six days, in a wave of outrage over economic stagnation and government austerity marking a shift after years of patience. Editors note: this panoramic picture is stitched from 6 separate photographs. REUTERS/Paul Hanna  (SPAIN – Tags: POLITICS CIVIL UNREST EMPLOYMENT BUSINESS)

Ten years ago, U.S. forces began bombing Afghanistan in retaliation against its Taliban rulers who refused to hand over the al Qaeda leaders responsible for the Sept. 11, 2001 attacks on the United States. Within weeks, the air strikes had helped Afghan opponents topple the Taliban, but in the decade since, the deposed Islamist fighters have returned to mount an ever more aggressive insurgency against an Afghan government backed by the United States and NATO. Since U.S. President Barack Obama took office in 2009, the U.S. force has tripled in size, but Washington and NATO now plan to begin withdrawing and to hand over responsibility for Afghanistan’s security to Afghan forces by 2014.  REUTERS/Carlos Barria/Files  (AFGHANISTAN – Tags: MILITARY)

NEW YORK, NY – JUNE 06: Former International Monetary Fund (IMF) chief Dominique Strauss-Kahn arrives back at his temporary Manhattan residence following a court appearance in Manhattan Supreme Court in the morning where he plead not guilty to charges that he sexually assaulted a hotel housekeeper last month on June 6, 2011 in New York City. Strauss-Kahn, who was expected to be a contender for the French presidency, made his first court appearance since he was let out on $1 million bail and set under house arrest last month.   Spencer Platt/Getty Images/AFP

¡Feliz 2012!
