El 28 de octubre de 1896, el maestro ruso Mijaíl Chigorin (1850 - 1908) fue el vencedor del Torneo de Budapest, con los mismos puntos que Rudolph Charousek. En el evento participaron algunos de los mejores ajedrecistas de la época, excepto el campeón, Emanuel Lasker, y el excampeón, Wilhelm Steinitz: Siegbert Tarrasch, David Janowski, Nelson Pillsbury y Carl Schlechter.
