Muy desesperado ha de estar Hamid Karzai para ofrecerle salvoconducto y diálogo al mulá Omar, en desafío a la doctrina del Pentágono, reiterada el mes pasado, de que el fugitivo líder talibán no puede tener papel ninguno en un hipotético proceso de reconciliación nacional en Afganistán.
Karzai es plenamente consciente de que su vida política (incluso la física) pende del hilo de respiración asistida que le dan sus padrinos exteriores. Todo el país sobrevive gracias a los cuidados intensivos de la intervención extranjera, pero su Ejército y sus instituciones siguen en estado de coma.
En cambio, los talibanes recuperan la salud por momentos. Hace cuatro días, el principal portavoz talibán, Zabihullah Mujahid, se permitió mantener durante casi una hora una entrevista con la BBC, hablando por teléfono satelital desde un lugar secreto, en la que incluso respondió sosegadamente a las preguntas de los oyentes del World Service.
Mujahid aseguró que la insurgencia talibán controla más de la mitad del territorio de Afganistán, y hasta hizo demagogia, alardeando de que en las áreas bajo su dominio ya no impera la barbarie integrista del régimen anterior. Si hemos de creerle, ya no decapitan ni mutilan a los reos, e incluso educan a las niñas.
Un electoralismo similar es el que motiva ahora a Karzai, sabedor de que las presidenciales del próximo otoño pueden marcar el final de su carrera, tras haber fracasado en la misión de hacer que sus compatriotas conocieran la paz. Su gesto no va dirigido al mulá Omar, sino a los afganos decepcionados por la evidente corrupción e ineficacia del Gobierno de Kabul.
Lo único que salva a Karzai (además de 70.000 soldados extranjeros) es que no tiene recambio. Nadie en ese torturado país podría sustituirle. Un logro demasiado exiguo para merecer nuestro apoyo.
