Se acaban de fallar los premios Pulitzer los máximos galardones del periodismo norteamericano. Entre las 14 categorías existen dos dedicadas al fotoperiodismo: "Breaking news Photography" y "Feature Photography". Estos premios se entregan a trabajos publicados en medios de los USA y se pueden dar a grupos de trabajo (staff) de publicaciones o agencias, a determinadas coberturas informativas o reportajes y no a una sola foto o a un fotógrafo en particular necesariamente. Cuando me enseñó mi jefe Jon Barandica la foto premiada de Obama que descansa sobre estas líneas, dije: "Pues... Bueno." Pensé que se le daba el premio a una sola foto y como esa de Obama ya hemos visto muchas durante las elecciones. Pero despues de ver el trabajo al completo y el trabajo sobre Haiti, me he quedado flipado...

En la primera categoría de "Breaking News Phorography", ha sido galardonado el fotógrafo del Miami Herald Patrick Farrell por su trabajo sobre las consecuencias del huracán Ike y las diferentes tormentas que arrasaron Haiti. Un trabajo en blanco y negro impresionante. Los finalistas en esta categoría fueron los fotógrafos de Ap que realizaron la cobertura del terremoto de Sichuan en China y Carolyn Cole de Los Angeles Times por su trabajo en las revueltas políticas en Kenya.

En la categoría de "Feature Photography" han premiado a Damon Winter de The New York Times por el trabajo realizado durante la campaña presidencial de Obama. Alguna de las fotos fueron tomadas el día sobre el que hablo en este post. Como finalistas se menciona a Carol Guzy de The Washington post por su trabajo de sobre recién nacidos en Sierra Leona, lugar donde existe la mayor tasa de mortalidad infantil del mundo y también Sonya Hebert de The Dallas Morning News por un trabajo sobre la unidad de cuidados paliativos de un hospital de Texas.

Los dos fotógrafos ganadores son grandes profesionales premiados con diferentes premios en múltiples ocasiones y que han cubierto todo tipo de historias en diferentes lugares del mundo. En la web de los premios Pulitzer podéis encontrar los pies de foto (captions) de todas las fotos y las biografías de los dos premiados. Menudas pedazo de fotos...

Y ahora os aconsejo que paréis un segundo, respirad y ver el trabajo sobre la campaña de Obama que fue premiado en la categoría "Feature Photography".
